GANT, taking inspiration from coastal culture

GANT, taking inspiration from coastal culture

The current Spring Summer GANT collection draws inspiration from the coastal cultures around the world.  Brazil, India and Long Island come together to create this eclectic mix of detailing.  The collection comes under three stories, Mad about Madras, Montauk and From Rio With Love.  What it does do, is  give you that preppy look, of which I  do have a soft spot for, with a subtle worldly twist.  I like the mix of stripes and madras checks.  I also love the stripe belt.  Love.

Dillon Montara Crafted Back Leather Patch

Dillon Montara Crafted Back Leather Patch

Kick Start Monday is back! I must have been looking with my eyes closed last week when I didn’t see this project I am sharing today. I love when a garment is loved in the process of the making and every detail encompasses beautiful design, good function and high quality. Dillon Montara is a denim collection from Robert Patterson and Steven Heard, based in Northern California.

The denim line utilises their many years of experience with denim with the jean ‘made slowly by hand’ from their Mission District of San Francisco factory. The silhouette on offer is a mid rise, slim tapered jean, not a skinny leg, not a straight leg, but a nice tapered fit. It’s minimal, clean and with all the things you want in a jean, including comfort. The detailing is beautiful, with the best in trims, materials and finishes. All the pockets are lined with Destroyer Twill Pocketing, with the coin pocket also lined for extra wear. In the video you can see the inside of the jean and how wonderful the quality is. It’s not all machine made either. If they can do it better by hand, then it’s done by hand. Time is taken to ensure the quality is of the highest standard.

Dillon Montara Denim Jean

Three fabrics are available in the jean. Firstly, The American, a 12.75oz cone selvedge milled fabric from North Carolina with a soft, natural hand feel. A great jean for daily wear. Next is the Pure Japan Blue, a 14.75oz indigo dyed Okayama milled selvedge blue Slubby. The fabric has a beautiful orange selvedge detail at the end of the ream which can be seen internally and on the cuff. Thicker than The American it is more rigid with a heavier weight. Lastly is The Noir – Kurobo Mills, a 15oz sulfer dyed Okayama milled Black Noir Selvedge in Super Black.

Alongside the core style in the jean, Dillon Montara also make slim fit (not skinny) shirts made from 100% Japanese Fabric, jackets and accessories. I particularly love the Key Chain. Inspired by Japanese fishermen, it comes with a leather dongle and brass key fob. Truly beautiful and a simple, clean design.

My favourite menswear stylist and good friend Caz Little, from Dashing Hounds in Melbourne, has had a busy start to 2014. Caz and I are always talking men’s style inspiration and we’ve decided each month on The Man Has Style we will bring to you a Dashing Hounds update! A short, snap-shot of what’s been happening, what’s coming up and a style tip or two along the way. Caz always has something going on so it’s wonderful to be able to share this news with you each month. Here’s your first of the monthly Dashing Hounds Menswear Updates!

TMHS: January has gone so fast, what did you work on with Dashing Hounds during this time?

CL: I didn’t really stop working on Dashing Hounds through January. I like to keep the ball rolling if I can. It’s an especially good way of beating the Melbourne heatwave by shopping and working indoors. A highlight for Dashing Hounds was styling the Grammy nominated future-soul band from Melbourne, Hiatus Kaiyote. Taking the guys out on a Saturday shopping frenzy in between their busy rehearsals and recordings, I styled the guys together with Melbourne stylist Amie Turnbull. Bender, Simon and Perrin from the band, are the music behind the voice of Nai Palm. The boys were more than happy to escape the hot studio for an afternoon of jean shopping at Res Denim, shirts and jackets at Handsom Clothing on Gertrude Street and hunting for belts, shoes & accessories from the men’s room at the Vintage Garage on Smith Street.

January also saw publicity shooting for Channel 9 TV show, Fat Tony and Co, amongst other things. The best way to know is as it’s happening is to follow @dashinghounds on Instagram so you can keep up to date.

TMHS: Style tip for Australian men for February?

CL: Get your self organised now for Winter! I know its hard for us to get our head around with summer in full swing, but it’s that time where winter collections are landing in store! Honestly, it is the best time to purchase new suits, shirts, ties and freshen up your wardrobe. Try something new and invest in a grey suit. Dry clean your current ones in your wardrobe. If you’re short on free time or just don’t even know where to start, Dashing Hounds can help you organise your wardrobe and take you shopping in just a few of hours!

TMHS: Any events coming up to keep an eye out for?

CL: Is it February already!?  Eating too many dumplings at Hu-Tongs for Chinese New Year and checking out the city lights for the White Night festival are February events! I’ll be sure to keep you posted on social media if I hear of anything else exciting for this month.

TMHS: Who should we follow on Instagram for some great men’s styling inspiration?

CL: A Poor Man’s Millions. An inked up gentleman by the name of Jared Acquaro. Jared is a stylist and shoe specialist at Henry Bucks on Collins Street, Melbourne. Jared really knows his shoes! I recently added him to my Dashing Hounds Pack this month too, which he was very appreciative of and kind enough to repost Dashing Hounds on his Instagram to say thank you. Such a gentleman!

TMHS: Favourite look and/or collection from the Autumn Winter 2014-2015 shows earlier this month?

CL: To be honest, I really have not had much time to take a really good look at the recent shows. I have however, had sneak peak of the Fall HUGO collections and love what I saw in the more younger driven collections, with sleek slim tailoring, leather lapel detailing and the return of grey in suiting to prove my point on grey suiting. Also, the double-breasted reefer jacket. I really am excited about this look coming through more in menswear! Worn the right way, I think it could be here to stay for a few seasons.

TMHS: Designer/brand to watch in menswear?

CL: Hardy Amies. While it’s been around a long time in the UK, it’s only been in the Australian market now less than two years, with the brand really taking off in the past six months at David Jones. Hardy Amies is my go to brand for a classic white slim cut shirt. Fresh white, 100% cotton with a textured surface, in the best slim cut fit I have seen on all different body shapes and sizes. The shirt also features in a french cuff. It’s an absolute necessity in every man’s wardrobe.

Alongside stockist David Jones, Hardy Amies have recently opened a stand alone store at Shop 8, 177 Toorak Road, South Yarra. For more details on Hardy Amies in Australia – www.hardyamies.com.au

Oliver Sweeney Hasketon Blue Suede Brogue

Oliver Sweeney Hasketon Blue Suede Brogue

This time last year, I wrote about the superbly crafted shoes at Oliver Sweeney, in particular the Aldeburgh Oxford Cut Brogue, which I should add, I am still in love with. This year, just in time for Valentine’s Day, I bring to you more news from Oliver Sweeney. I love the latest promotion they have stating, “DOES SHE JUDGE YOU BY YOUR SHOES?”. The team at Oliver Sweeney go on to explain this and have said it so well, I don’t want to change a word!

Oliver Sweeney: Does She Judge You By Your Shoes?

Oliver Sweeney: Does She Judge You By Your Shoes?

“You work out, you’re well-read and you know the difference between a sauvignon and a merlot. You call your mum at least once a week and you’re well travelled. You can be doing all of the right things to impress the opposite sex but if your shoes aren’t up to scratch, you’re doing it all wrong.

Wearing a pair of Oliver Sweeney shoes says that you’re confident, conscientious and discerning. You pay attention to detail, you appreciate only the finest and most luxurious craft and quality and you make intelligent decisions when it comes to letting your style determine the man you are. We know there’s more to life than shoes but well, the facts are there … single, or in a relationship, now’s your chance to make a real impression.

You can thank us later.”

Ameer Jumabhoy, La Martina & Polo

“The key to living is to have passion in what you do.  See the beauty in life, see opportunity in obstacles and inspire through respect”.  It’s my personal philosophy and one I carry through to what I do with The Man Has Style also.  I’m always on the look out for others who I believe live this same way.  The people that inspire me.  I recently met International Polo Player, Ameer Jumabhoy and was instantly inspired by his passion for life and in what he does.  We have had some great conversations since and I want to share with you all his story.

TMHS: Polo is a big part of your life.  How did you find yourself involved with polo?

AJ: I was born into a polo family. My grandfather was the first one who started playing at the age of 26 and my dad and all his siblings grew up around the Singapore Polo Club. As a child I remember going to watch my dad play and some of my earliest memories are of my riding lessons when I was around 5. I guess I have always been around horses so the progression into polo was quite seamless. I guess you could say that I grew up on a saddle!

Ameer Jumabhoy | Photo credit: Patrick Poh

Ameer Jumabhoy | Photo credit: Patrick Poh

TMHS: Tell me more about La Sarita.

AJ: La Sarita is something very special to me. Sara is my sister and we named our family team La Sarita after her- it means ‘little Sara’ in Spanish. Family and polo go together very well and you will often find polo players who are the 3rd or 4th generation of players in their family. La Sarita brings us all together and when the team is playing, it is great to be able to share the field with my brother and father while my sisters, grandfather and mother are ever present cheerleaders on the side. My sisters love riding but don’t really want to play polo so it works very well for us as it means we don’t have to fight over horses most of the time!

TMHS: For those who don’t know much about polo, where is a good place to start to learn?

AJ: The great thing about the sport is that it is such an international game that there are so many places where one can pick it up and learn. My suggestion would be to do a simple internet search to find out where the nearest polo facility is and simply give them a ring and enquire as to how one could go about learning. More often than not, people in the polo world are thrilled to teach new members and get them addicted to the game. It is great to see so many new people all over the world picking up the game and I hope this will help in making it more mainstream. The misconception people have is that polo is expensive and up to a certain level that is true; however, at the beginner level, one does not have to spend crazy money to enjoy the sport. In fact, it can be very affordable.

TMHS: You have achieved some wonderful accomplishments in your career.  What are some stand out moments for you over this time?

AJ: From a sporting aspect, the biggest highlight of my career was the 2010 Royal Malaysian Polo Association International final in which La Sarita ended up champions. It is one of the ‘grand prix’ tournaments in Southeast Asia and I hope that this year the team has another strong year in which we are able to win. I was also proud to have won the Audemars-Piguet Gold and Silver Cups in 2009 and 2010 which are the biggest tournaments to win in Singapore. I’ve had many amazing opportunities in the sport, being able to take polo to the Houston Rodeo in 2013 and being part of the organising committee for charity polo games like Charity Chukker (2013) and Horses & Hats (2012) represent some of my fondest memories of bringing polo to the masses and raising social awareness for causes that I feel are close to my heart.

TMHS: Your passion for charity work is quite inspiring.  I was especially moved by your story relating to cancer.  Your positivity and outlook on life is nothing short of exceptional.  Tell me more how you came to start the Golden Goals project and what you have achieved so far – and aim to achieve in the future through this project.

AJ: The Golden Goals project began in 2010 when two people close to me were diagnosed with cancer. I was greatly affected and wanted to combat the disease but as a Political Science major, it was tough to do in the academic world! My attention shifted to polo and I approached the Texas Children’s Hospital with a proposal that I would get sponsors to donate US$10 for every goal I score and all the money would go towards fighting paediatric cancer. I was overwhelmed by the support and in the first year we raised US$27,000. Since then, I have had the opportunity to use Golden Goals as a platform to raise awareness for breast cancer and fertility treatment awareness for women in Malaysia, together with the royal family, as well as paediatric cancer treatment in Pakistan. To date, I am proud to say that through projects I have worked with, close to US$200,000 has been raised for various social causes and I hope it doesn’t stop there – perhaps one day in the future I will have the pleasure of doing something in Australia!

TMHS: In August 2013, you were appointed brand ambassador to La Martina, a fashion label and polo brand from Argentina.  Tell me more of this partnership.

AJ: This partnership actually started (unofficially) way back in 2002. I was in Argentina on my first polo trip outside Singapore and my dad took me to this new boutique called La Martina that made both polo technical equipment as well as polo inspired fashion. The store I went to was in the Arribeños area of Buenos Aires and I was instantly taken aback by how beautiful the shop was. More than that, the first shirt I saw in the store was a Singapore #4 shirt- a replica of the shirt that my dad wore at the 2001 World Cup Qualifiers in Pakistan. I still have that shirt in my cupboard. In July last year I was driving with my dad to play a tournament in Malaysia when I got a call from Adrian Simonetti, the CEO of La Martina. He told me that Asia did not have a representative for the brand and he asked if I would like to come on board. I said yes without any hesitation. Today, La Martina has made waves in the fashion world and I am proud to be appointed as an ambassador at such an exciting time in the brand’s history.

TMHS: Polo has taken you to many countries outside of your home of Singapore, including Argentina, the United States, Malaysia, Thailand, Pakistan and Australia.  Do you have any plans to return to play in Australia?  It would be great to see you play here!

AJ: I would love to have the opportunity to come back and play in Australia. I have fantastic memories of playing in Yaloak and visiting Geelong. To me, these places represent the real Australia and have some of the nicest people I have met. It would be great to return as I have not played Down Under since I was 14. I will do my best to fit it into my schedule, perhaps for 2015!

TMHS: How would you describe your style?

AJ: I would say I tend to dress to suit the occasion. If I’m at a black tie I prefer paying homage to my ethnicity by wearing an Indian sherwani. I am very comfortable in suits for meetings (knit ties are a personal favourite accessory) and for dinners and during the day, I can be quite relaxed in a simple t-shirt and a pair of shorts. I think there’s a right time and place to wear a specific outfit.

Ameer Jumabhoy | Photo credit: Patrick Poh

Ameer Jumabhoy | Photo credit: Patrick Poh

TMHS: Favourite places to shop for menswear?

AJ: La Martina! Without a doubt, it combines all the best elements of what it means to play polo. The smell of freshly cut leather, the numbers on the shirts, the logos and patches… these remind me of being at a game and really bring the thrill of game into the world of fashion. It’s the perfect match.

TMHS: Three things you can’t do without in your day?

AJ: My iPhone, sunglasses and cologne. Fresh, cool and always connected!

TMHS: Where can readers of The Man Has Style find out more about Ameer Jumabhoy?

AJ: Readers can follow me on my social media:

Facebook: www.facebook.com/jumabhoy.ameer
Instagram: @ameerjumabhoy
Twitter: @ameerjumabhoy

and on my website www.ameerjumabhoy.com

I also love interacting with my fans and can be reached at ameerjumabhoy@gmail.com

For La Martina, you can visit www.lamartina.com

TMHS: Any final words for readers of The Man Has Style?

AJ: I would just like to say a big thank you for giving me the chance to tell my story in The Man Has Style. I hope many of the readers will support me in my polo initiatives, I really can’t do it without the supporters I have all over the world. Do follow me on my social media and I would love to interact with you guys as well! Hope everyone is having a great year and all the best for future successes to come!

Mizzen+Main Blazer

Mizzen+Main Blazer

Travelling with a blazer can be an effort, especially when you want to take one with you, but not necessarily wear it all the time.  You want to pack it in your luggage, however when you take it out of your bag, it’s creased, out of shape and looking like you have had it screwed up in a ball on the floor for ten years.  You want your blazer to look fresh, crisp and to keep it’s shape.  Not only all of those things, you also want it to be comfortable and easy to wear alongside using a fabric that won’t make you sweat or have an odour.  Did I mention functionality? You want your blazer to be functional.  Finally, and of high importance, it must look good.

Mizzen+Main Blazer

Mizzen+Main Blazer

What a list! So when I came across the Mizzen+Main 0-5 Blazer on Kickstarter, I was more than pleased to see it ticked all the boxes.  Wrinkle free, great fit, 4-way stretch fabric and you can throw it in your bag and take it out, ready to wear without anyone the wiser – the perfect travel companion. Oh, and it looks great!

Australian Artist Michael Zavros always seems to keep me at a loss for words.  I am fascinated with detail and luxury, from a view of the time it takes to design or create, and the beauty of the finished product.  His paintings are exquisite.  The realism quite spectacular, taking you to a world of the most beautiful of luxuries and the depths of the most lavish dreams.  When I see the images online I spend so long looking at every detail.  There is so much detail.  However, in person, when you see the artworks in front of you, the detail becomes even more apparent and it is then I am truly lost for words.  My mind is almost silenced and I feel hypnotised by the world he has created.  Michael Zavros is truly an amazing and talented artist.  I recently caught up with Michael so I could share with you more about his inspirations and why he is attracted to this luxury and style.

TMHS: Luxury and style are key elements in so many of your artworks. What attracts you to both of these things?

MZ: I think that I am probably just interested in what could be described as a European aesthetic. I probably respond more to beauty. I am drawn to luxury objects partly because most often they are borne of a kind of artisanship, they are usually very well made and often by hand. I think this is what differentiates expensive things with luxurious things. The term luxury is certainly misused and frequently. To paraphrase Andy Warhol’s observation on beauty, if everything is luxurious then nothing is. Luxury and its trappings becomes almost part of a performance between the subject matter in the work, its application and my life as an artist.

TMHS: You have achieved some amazing accomplishments in your career. What stands out to you as one that is particularly special?

MZ: Thank you. I never really allow myself to navel gaze but certainly the Moran Art Prize was a great professional moment for me, and I loved working with my daughter Phoebe to realise it. The Bulgari Art Award was another very major achievement for me and the residency that followed was so influential. Bulgari are an incredible company and I feel almost as though I have become part of their family.

(see the Bulgari Art Award image and details here – www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/collection/works/181.2012 )

TMHS: Family plays a big part in your life. How have they become part of your art practice?

MZ: Having three children means I have less time than before and this has had a big impact on my work which is very time consuming, but actually since they came along I have made more work than ever before. I waste very little time now. They influence me too in all sorts of ways, some explicit and some implied, but I do find myself looking to my children more as the source of work. I work often with my eldest, Phoebe, in particular. We clash over homework but in the studio we are very simpatico. She is very intuitive about what I am trying to achieve and she really gets into the process.

TMHS: I particularly like the recent Charmer exhibition at Philip Bacon Galleries. Amazing luxury designer ties that look like cobras. Tell me more about this series.

MZ: The ties are really about seduction and the lure of beauty and of course luxury. I like ties and I have big collection of them. Many I inherited or bought, vintage. They’re such curious ribbons of silk decorated sometimes with elaborate patterning and they have always seemed to me snake-like in their design, like a cobra at the thicker end, its hood flaring as it is being charmed. But they are the charmers, charming me as I paint and they charm their audience, trading in a desire for the work itself.

TMHS: The Debaser series is one I always look back to. The men’s facial features are blocked out. What does this represent?

MZ: I sought to remove that which made those models relevant. Beauty and youth are paramount in contemporary culture, they have a currency all of their own, and I wanted to destabilise that and negate it somewhat. It’s sort of perverse to invest so much work in something such as this only to remove it. Of course the charcoal can never be completely erased, it stains the paper and so I’m left with a ghost mark of both the drawing and person.

© Michael Zavros - Debaser Burberry Prorsum - 122cm x 86cm

TMHS: I am a big fan of your personal style. You dress impeccably at your exhibition openings and in every photo I see you in. Who inspires you to dress so well and who are some of your favourite designers?

MZ: In recent years I can afford to buy Italian suits or have something tailor-made, which is a true luxury. Mostly I like classical simple tailoring, but with flair, I like a colour or pattern. I admire the men captured in Slim Aarons photographs from the 70s and 80s, European aristocrats or tycoons reclining on yachts or by their pools or with their horses and children. They’re real men, hirsute peacocks in little short swimming trunks or effortless in pink linen suits, cravats or dinner suits. I like Etro a lot, also Gucci and Ferragamo. And I like Versace for its audacious 1980s Euro style.

TMHS: Three things you can’t do without in your day?

MZ: Coffee. Eggs. ABC Radio National.

Living on the Gold Coast of Australia, people often associate it with surf, beaches and a laid back relaxed lifestyle.  That definitely is a big part of it but the beauty is there is more.  A growing culture of art and design, alongside the addition of some fantastic restaurants, bars and cafes have started to changed the outlook of this coastal city.  While it is still growing and has some way to go in the area of menswear, it is comforting to know that there are some places to go to get your unique design fix.  One area of design that can be a tough task finding the style you want is eyewear.  I am thankful to have found an optometrist in Burleigh Heads that not only is brilliant with eye health but also has unique and fashion oriented designer frames with a great selection of men’s styles.  The retail store is Envision Optical.  I met with owner, Andrew Bowden, and talked with him about the different aspects of being involved in the eyewear and eye health industry on the Gold Coast.  If you are on the Gold Coast, be sure to visit the James Street store in Burleigh Heads to see for yourself.

TMHS: Thank you for being part of The Man Has Style!  Can you tell me more about how you came to be working with eyewear and eye health.

AB: Well, it’s pretty simply the thing that ended up first on my uni application form! I had always been science orientated and chose optometry in the end because of some family background, primarily because I wanted to work in health care and own my own business one day. Over the first few years of working in optometry, I developed my passion for great eyewear. I started on the coast in the mid nineties and after a few years moved back to Brisbane where I worked three years in an independent practice in New Farm, renowned for its different pieces. I really developed my appreciation for eyewear as a piece of art/fashion that can truly help define your look on a given day.

TMHS: You have four stores across the Gold Coast with your main store in James Street in Burleigh Heads.  How does this store stand apart from the others?

AB: Well it’s not really our main store as such but it’s certainly what my wife and I call our “concept store”, for what we want the Envision brand to represent for the eyewear connoisseur. It’s the location that we decided would be the representative of the fashion side of the Envision brand. All the locations have cutting edge eye care technology so we can provide top-level optometry care. All of them have some great brands and ranges of frames and sunglasses, however Burleigh was the location we decided would carry the ranges that were different and not so mainstream. So, you’ll find ranges and brands that are not widely known, alongside having a true story behind the brand that we appreciate and we feel others will too.

TMHS: This store is a great place to find frames that are more unique to the fashionable buyer.  What inspired you to make the focus of this location more unique?

AB:  Well, when the previous partnership I was in, which was across 10 locations on the coast, came to an end, I decided that in the four locations I would end up with, we would concentrate on providing the absolute best in leading edge eye-care. Additionally, I also wanted to fuse this with a great retail experience. The locations are all very diverse and James St had the potential to evolve into a really cool village precinct with the diversity of shops, coffee dens and bars that we are now seeing. I wanted to have one location that was like our concept store for what I wanted the Envision brand to be. It was the one with a bit more focus on the retail side of optometry. The aim was for it to become the destination of choice for Gold Coasters and visitors to the coast for eyewear with a difference.

I always felt, and indeed had feedback from people, that “there aren’t any cool frames on the coast”, as well as, “I buy all my frames down south or overseas because there’s nothing special here”. I wanted to change that. My wife is an artist and designer and we both love art, great design, literature, music and individual expression rather than mass trends. This location we could evolve into a little place to go for the “different stuff”. We knew there were people who appreciated quality and unique styles, we just had to provide ranges that would excite and interest them. It’s evolved into exactly that. Styles you won’t find anywhere else on the coast. Michael, my Dispensing Manager at Burleigh, has a fantastic eye for finding the right style and fit for each face, plus all the technical knowledge to ensure that the seeing bit works too!

TMHS: It’s great that you are also a big believer in education and teaching people about eye health.  There are so many new developments that many people don’t know about.  How do you integrate fashion and eye health in your business?

AB: Our internal mantra in all our staff training and meetings is “educate, educate, educate!”. The name Envision came about partly through me wanting a name that represented our role in providing visual solutions that are unique to each individual, to enhance their ability to live their life and enjoy it. Vision is so important and so precious. I believe most people don’t know what they want, or indeed what’s available to achieve that. Our job is to let them know what’s possible. I feel like much of our modern consumer society is about dumbing things down and this is certainly true in the optical industry. Yet, like so many other fields the examination equipment, the lenses and frames, are all so much more technologically advanced than ever, so it’s imperative that we let people know what the digital scanning equipment we use does to help us maximize their eye health through early detection and prevention of eye problems.

Educating on the best options for achieving optimum vision and eye health, including nutritional therapies, alongside how much goes into making the latest spectacle lens designs, that can ensure crystal clear vision is important. There are literally hundreds of different lens designs and it’s like comparing a phone camera to an SLR in image quality. There’s a reason the better lenses give you clearer vision and it’s our job to explain that so people understand why we recommend them. We utilise iPad technology to visually demonstrate various eye conditions and treatment options using animated educational clips. We email these to patients to help them better understand their condition and process the information later because we all know we forget what we’re told at medical appointments. The iPads are used to explain the various lens design and treatment options like tints, coatings and thinner options again to help people better understand, what really are, quite technical solutions.

TMHS: Having worked as a designer for most of my adult life, I am quite particular in what I like.  For me, it’s not just about the basic frame, but the quality in the detailing.  You showed me a pair when I was in visiting you recently and I loved the hinging detail.  Can you tell me some more about this brand/designer.

AB: They are my new frames! They are the Australian Brand ISSON, model LORD J by Sydney designer Catherine Freris Federici. We met through her role as Australian distributor for some really great brands like LA Eyeworks and Claire Goldsmith. We really like what she has done with the ISSON range and made the decision to bring it to the coast. Catherine’s brand motto is, “Imagination rules the world”. The brand has a great mix of kooky styles and classic interpretations. There are optical and sunglass ranges and though you may not have heard of them, they are sold in 29 countries and have been around for 10 years. I love the hinge on the Lord J. It’s a very unique hinge plate design Catherine uses in her sunglasses and has introduced to some frames in her new optical collection. ISSON is just one of the brands that really resonate with what I want Envision to be for people. The source of something unique and special. You’re not going to see everyone wearing the frames.

TMHS: What is strong in men’s styling of frames at the moment in the Australian market?

AB:  There is still a lot of really cool heavy acetate retro shapes but we are starting to see raw metals like the surgical steel used in IC Berlin coming through. Angular, industrial vibes but very lightweight and comfortable.

TMHS: Prediction for style going forward for men’s frames and also sunglasses?

AB:  Industrial tones and greys. Larger shapes, more aviator and double bridge retro seventies and eighties styles. Materials like titanium, surgical steel, carbon fibre and recycled wood. Sunnies are tending to be larger size and polarised.

ISSON Luigi Midnight

ISSON Luigi Midnight

TMHS: What designers/brands do you feel currently lead the way with frames and sunglasses in men’s style

AB:  IC Berlin, William Morris London, Isson, Tom Ford, Roger Henley. Plus, can’t go past the Maui Jim suns for our Gold Coast lifestyle.

TMHS: What are your personal favourite frames?  Tell me more about the design and designer.  Also for sunglasses.

AB:  There’s too many! I currently have optical frames by LA Eyeworks, ISSON, the Australian bespoke designer Roger Henley, the French range DILEM and the awesome German range IC Berlin. ISSON and Roger are beautiful unique hand crafted high quality Italian acetate frames made in Australia. Roger Henley is an Adelaide based artisan designer who has made frames for over 20 years and he produces less than 1000 frames a year. He has an amazing variety of colours and shapes that he works with. LA Eyeworks are an LA brand created 30 years ago by two optical dispensers bored with what was available in the marketplace. They are really fun and quirky at times and have a huge following by stylish celebs.

Dilem are a unique French range that have interchangeable frame temples (sides). So you get two pairs with the frame and you can change colours and the look of your frame very easily. They are handmade in France and are really light and comfortable to wear. IC Berlin are predominantly a metal range: very industrial vive, flat metal finish, surgical steel, screw-less hinge design and very light and comfortable. They have some great suns. For my sunglasses, I love some of the brands we have like William Morris London, ISSON and Superdry, but I can’t go past my Maui Jims, living on the Gold Coast. They are the best polarised lens and I’ve had so many pairs I can’t keep track of them.

TMHS: Who are some of the brands in men’s frames that you stock?

AB: IC Berlin, De Stijl, John Varvatos, William Morris London, Tom Ford, Isson, LA Eyeworks, Roger Henley, Dilem

SuperDry

TMHS: It’s great to see you are involved with some fantastic charity organisations.  Tell me more about why you chose these charities and why this is an important part of your business.

AB:  I believe in compassionate capitalism and helping those in our society that really need a lift up. My mum has actually worked in International aid development for many years after she finished being a high school teacher, so contributing has always been important to me. I decided early on that there were too many good causes, so we have focused on vision related charities for our support. I believe in thinking local, yet remembering we are a global community. I decided we would have a local, national and international vision related charity that we support. We support the awesome international organisation Optometry Giving Sight, The Guide Dogs and a local Gold Coast Blindness support group. We also act as collection centres in our branches for used spectacle donations that get send overseas to help those who can’t afford specs to see.

TMHS: Three things you can’t do without in your day?

AB:  Seeing my wife and two boys, a good coffee and music.

Steve McQueen is always showing up in menswear as a style icon and “The King of Cool” continues to inspire men of all ages.  At one stage in the seventies, McQueen was the highest paid actor in the world, an instantly recognisable man. He is known for roles in films such as The Thomas Crown Affair, Bullitt and The Great Escape, as well as his enthusiasm for motorcycles and race cars. It’s easy to see why he was known as “The King of Cool”, with his ability to look stylish and at ease, in every situation.  A style icon for sure.

The Audi Czech Snow Polo Masters 2014 was recently held in Špindlerův Mlýn, Czech Republic.  Polo in the snow is not something I have seen much of.  When I first saw this I was intrigued!  Polo played in the snow is on a smaller field (60 yards by 20 yards) and I had so many questions about how it differed to the polo I was used to seeing.  I caught up with International polo player, Ameer Jumabhoy to find out more about this fascinating event.

TMHS: Tell me more of the match in Prague and how you came to be playing polo in the snow.

AJ: It was my first time playing snow polo and what an experience it was! Snow polo had always been on my bucket list and I was initially contacted by the organiser and founder of Gill Polo, Naveed Gill, on Facebook. At first I was a little skeptical because I was unaware of any polo being played in the Czech Republic, but after a friend traveled to play a tournament at Gill Polo last year and came back with very positive comments, that sealed the deal and I committed to going to the Czech Republic to play in the country’s first snow polo game.

TMHS: How different is playing polo in the snow to playing on dry ground? What are some of the stand out things you feel are different?

AJ: It is hugely different… almost like playing a completely different game! While the horse aspect was similar, the rules, type of ball and general gameplay was very different. For example, in an actual game of polo, we have huge spaces we can run into and control a ball that is smaller but heavier. In snow polo, the spaces are smaller and consequently, you have to turn a lot faster. However, the ball is very difficult to control as it is unpredictable; it is pretty much like a smaller beach ball.

TMHS: What was the highlight for you while you were there?

AJ: I always say that people make a massive difference to an experience and this sentiment was proved correct once again. I take away memories of new friends, passionate polo players and hospitable Czech people. I hope I have the chance to return to the country and play there again because I really fell in love with everything about the Czech Republic.

TMHS: What’s next for you in polo?

AJ: We start the next set of Malaysian tournaments this Saturday so I guess, as they say, there’s “no rest for the wicked!” The polo season is now packed within Southeast Asia for me but I am also considering offers to play elsewhere in Europe later in the summer.

Lucas Dowling: Men’s Hair And A Series Called Dandy

Dandy by Lucas Dowling

Dandy by Lucas Dowling

Men’s hair can be one of the most memorable things about a man.  If you think of  style icons from the past, many of them, such as Elvis Presley and James Dean, have hair that is instantly recognisable. Finding the person who looks after your hair is just as important as the way it looks.  A few years ago all these people were showing up with amazing hair.  I kept hearing the same answer to the question, “who cut your hair?”.  Each time it was Lucas Dowling of Mieka Hairdressing.  In 2013, Lucas was named Men’s Hairdresser of the Year.  It seemed quite fitting for the man who was demanding attention time after time with his great hair styling.  I caught up with Lucas recently to chat men’s hair and the series, Dandy.

TMHS: How did you come to be working with Mieka Hairdressing and what keeps you on the Gold Coast?

LD: I started working with Mieka Hairdressing six years ago in Melbourne. I grew up on the Gold Coast and when the opportunity arose to be involved with our Gold Coast Salon in 2011, I jumped at the prospect. I love the lifestyle the Gold Coast provides. The time I spend out in the sun far outweighs the things that I miss about big city living.

Dandy by Lucas Dowling

Dandy by Lucas Dowling

TMHS: You were named 2013 Men’s Hairdresser of the Year, a fantastic achievement.  Tell me more about this.

LD: It was an amazing experience; it has opened many doors. I’ve never been so nervous in my whole life as on the awards night. The whole process of putting a collection and submission together took a number of months from the initial planning to execute the final product. I’m very lucky to work closely with our Creative Director Tracey Hughes, and there is no way the last twelve months would have been possible without her guidance and advice.

TMHS: The ‘Dandy’ series is quite spectacular.  What was the inspiration for the styling?

LD: The Inspiration for the styling was based around “Teddy Boys” of London in the 1950’s.

Dandy by Lucas Dowling

Dandy by Lucas Dowling

TMHS: Do you find men are becoming more open to new styles and paying more attention to their grooming?

LD: Definitely! Men are absolutely more focused on fashion and grooming than previously. I’ve definitely seen a shift in the style of men on the Gold Coast in the past few years; they’re appearing more metropolitan.

TMHS:  What is popular with men currently for hair styling?

LD: The biggest trend that we are seeing at the moment is having longer hair on top and having hair shaved through the sides and back. The longer hair through the top is usually an extreme length. Long enough to tie in a pony tail or have a topknot. We are also seeing a lot of barbering techniques – clean, tapered edges and shaved-in partings are also very prevalent.

Dandy by Lucas Dowling

Dandy by Lucas Dowling

TMHS: What is your prediction for men’s hair styling going forward?

LD: Medium length hair which is very textured and disheveled around the edges. With hair being so structured and manicured recently, I think we will see a shift over the next twelve months to styles which are relaxed and deconstructed.

TMHS: Three things you can’t do without in your day?

LD: Good Coffee, lots of sunshine and my boat.

TMHS: Describe your personal style

LD: I’m a very casual person outside of work. You will always find me in an oversized blank (oversized singlet). I hate wearing clothes with logos or decals. I generally pair that with my beloved wranglers and cool sneakers. I always wear my Karen Walker Tortoise Shell Sunglasses – and minimal accessories.

Dandy by Lucas Dowling

Dandy by Lucas Dowling

TMHS: Any favorite designers/brands for menswear?

LD: When I attend industry events or functions I always wear Et Al, which is a Melbourne-based label. Their clothes are edgy while still maintaining a masculine feel. Everything is black, which I’m obsessed with in a formal setting.

TMHS: Why should men on the Gold Coast come to see you for their hair?

LD: I think men’s hair should be simple, carefree and lean. I will always work with my clients’ face structure and hair type to create a look, which is low maintenance, yet embellishes my clients’ natural features.

The striking colour of magenta in the Calibre Autumn Winter 2014 collection had me mesmerised from the moment I saw the campaign.  I love the brilliance of this colour against the wonderful neutrals. The magenta, combined with the dark backdrop, gives an extra punch to the overall look.  Added to the colour mix are forest green, amber and Russian blue.  I can almost feel the texture of the fabrics when you look at the photos just from the use of colour and light.

The images were shot by Beau Grealy and feature International model, Garrett Neff, who you may recognise from Calibre’s 20th Anniversary campaign, quite lovely really they decided to have him return for their 25th Anniversary.  I like seeing the return of a model many years later. Garrett is also well known for his work as a Calvin Klein model.

The popular lean silhouette of the Calibre collection is still evident, updating it this season with a more relaxed feel.  With references to contemporary sportswear, using softer, more technical fabrics and shapes allowing a play on layering, the collection really embraces garments that can easily be worn as well as look amazing.  Back to that amazing magenta bomber jacket!  It is reversible also, with the magenta outer in a silk twill and the reverse side, a shower proof navy nylon.  A favourite of mine from this beautiful collection.  Guys, you need to get onto it, and don’t forget about that bag either!

Aston Martin V12 Vantage S

Aston Martin V12 Vantage S

One of my favourite places on the Gold Coast, Marina Mirage, has teamed up with the Sunshine Group to bring us a fantastic event, the “Best of British” luxury and sports automobiles festival.  It is happening this Friday 11 April until Sunday 13 April.

What cars will you see at the show?  It’s a luxurious affair that’s for sure. There will be over $5 million in vehicles from Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce and Jaguar on display.  Amongst the collection will be the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S and the Vanquish Volante. Two beautiful cars from Aston Martin.  The Rolls-Royce Wraith, the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever, will be showcased, alongside the most expensive Phantom family model from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Queensland.  That’s enough to get me there!

It’s worth a visit with so much to see (and buy!) at Marina Mirage.  It’s a great weekend to spend some time there under the iconic rooftop sails, have a long lunch, do some shopping, have a look around the marina at the spectacular boats and of course, spend time to admire the luxurious automobiles.

Back in January I featured the campaign for Spring Summer 2014 from Hardy Amies.  The collection is a strong one, with so many pieces that carry across to suit the Australian climate even as it gets cooler.  The beautiful single breasted ink grosgrain lapel jacket, featured above in the campaign, and below as a flat lay, works so well with the black silk bow tie and white cotton-poplin bibbed evening shirt.  Team it with the  black stripe cotton chambray scarf, wool trousers and blue canvas tasseled loafers, and you are ready to go to your special event.   Below are some ways you can put the collection together.  Which is your favourite?

Sunglass Hut Pop-Up Container Store open during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Weekend 2014

SUNGLASS HUT INVITES YOU TO THEIR POP-UP CONTAINER STORE – OPEN DURING MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION WEEKEND 2014.

As Australia’s fashion designers present their new season’s collections during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Weekend Australia 2014, Sunglass Hut is hosting a pop-up container store on site and open to the public this weekend.

During fashion week, Sunglass Hut set up a lending library for the guests that attended MBFWA.  The fashionistas were encouraged  to loan new styles and protect their eyes from the street style snappers and the random burst of sun.

The lending Library is now converted into a pop-up store for the consumer days of MBFWA.  This weekend, the pop-up store has over 90 fashion forward pieces from unreleased limited edition collections. These styles are currently unavailable at Sunglass Hut stores and will be stocked exclusively at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Weekend from the Sunglass Hut pop-up container.

Brands available for purchase include selected styles from Ray-Ban, Persol, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Tory Burch, Vogue and DKNY amongst others.  This selection includes one off samples and best sellers.

The Sunglass Hut Pop-Up Store will be staffed by top Sunglass Hut stylists from across Sydney. These fashion savvy stylists will match you with the perfect style that will suit not only your face shape but your personality.

The container is located at 245 Wilson St Eveleigh, right outside Carriageworks.
Pop-Up Container Opening Hours:

Saturday 12th April: 12pm – 8pm
Sunday 13th April: 11am – 6pm
