moelleux in Coolangatta on the Gold Coast

moelleux in Coolangatta on the Gold Coast

People are always asking me they can shop for menswear on the Gold Coast and I am happy to say there is one new store to add to the list.  Moelleux has opened in Coolangatta, a wonderful addition to the southern end of the coast and stepping up to become one of my favourite retail fit outs I have seen here.  Clean lines, minimal and mostly black and white.  It’s clean, inspiring and has some great brands in stock.  I had a chat with owners, Jenna and Bryn, about their wonderful store, moelleux.

TMHS: What inspired the name ‘moelleux’ ?

J&B: Many things inspired the name moelleux for our store. Being a French word, for us French imbues class and style. It’s also a very aesthetically pleasing word with the letter formation. Moelleux is a descriptive word that can mean soft, comfortable and suave which is appropriate as moelleux prides itself on providing products made from beautiful fabrics and of exceptional quality.

TMHS: For those who don’t know, how is Moelleux pronounced?

J&B: MWEH LEU

TMHS: What attracted you to Coolangatta on the Gold Coast?

J&B: Coolangatta is a geographically stunning place. The coastline is beautiful, the surf is good and the general vibe around town is so laid back. After moving from capital cities, it feels like a bit of a time warp. While the general laid back surf vibe will always remain in Coolangatta, there is so much opportunity in this town for cultural growth away from the hustle and bustle of a major city.

TMHS: Tell me a little of your backgrounds and how you came to open Moelleux.

J&B: We both grew up in Perth. While Jenna focused on her career in fashion, designing for several years in Melbourne, I spent time drifting though America and Europe seeking… nothing in particular.

After settling on the Gold Coast last year, the lack of higher end boutiques (especially menswear) was clearly evident. We recognized it as an opportunity to create our own store that shares the labels and styles we have come to love.

TMHS: What menswear brands do you stock?

J&B: Sixpack France, B.W.G.H, Libertine-Libertine, Commoners, Vanishing Elephant, Orphn, Stolen Girlfriends Club, Sly Guild, Nobody, Jamie Fame, illesteva eyewear, Triumph & Disaster.

TMHS: The fit out of the store is a stand out. I love the simplicity of everything and the clean lines. Who worked on the design and where did you draw inspiration from?

J&B: Firstly, Thank you! We both share a similar and clear perspective of how we wanted Moelleux to look. The fit out is very much focused on clean lines and a minimalistic approach. Basically, we wanted to create a store that could just as easily be found on any Major City High Street, as well as an alleyway in Coolangatta.

The labels we house in Moelleux deserve to be presented in a sleek, visually appealing store so a lot of inspiration was actually drawn from a variety of our labels own flagship stores.

TMHS: Three things you can’t do without in your day?

J&B: Coffee, music, laughter…

TMHS: What does the near future hold for Moelleux?

J&B: We hope to have the online store up and running soon. Also, with Jenna’s strong background in design and production, an in-house label is definitely on the horizon.

TMHS: Any events coming up?

J&B: Not as such… Perhaps we’ll do something for when the new AW14 ranges drop.  Stay tuned!

TMHS: How can readers find out more about the store?

J&B: (online store soon)

Facebook: www.facebook.com/moelleuxstore

Instagram: @moelleux_store

TMHS: Finally, why should people come and visit Moelleux when they are on the Gold Coast?

J&B: Moelleux offers quality labels that are hard to find here on the Gold Coast and in some cases, cannot be found here at all. Through very selective buying from an eclectic range of labels, we supply limited numbers of high quality pieces for a unique look.

Triumph & Disaster

Triumph & Disaster

Last week, Triumph & Disaster hosted their official Australian launch in Melbourne. Held at Captains of Industry, the night was a great success.  Guests were treated to a hand wash with the ‘Shearers Soap’ from Triumph & Disaster upon arrival, followed by a glass of ‘bootleg liquor’ to set the mood. A soulful reading of Rudyard Kipling poem, ‘IF’, by Tottie Goldsmith, some bluesy tunes from Helen Corry & Bonjah, and a whole lot of delicious goodness from Moa Beer and Westwinds Gin, made the Australian launch for Triumph & Disaster a great night.  Founder, Dion Nash has many reasons to feel proud of the brand.  Sian Holder, T&D’s Australian General Manager, explained that while there are over 300 accounts worldwide, including names such as Fred Segal and Selfridges, it is still early days in Australia.  If indications of the current retailers are anything to go by, Triumph & Disaster are going to have a big presence here.  I had the opportunity to ask Dion a few questions about Triumph & Disaster and the Australian launch.

TMHS: The Triumph & Disaster brand captured my attention immediately.  I had heard great things about it from Caz at Dashing Hounds, so it was my mission to find out more and I’m so pleased I did. The product itself, the packaging, images and videos are all amazing. What inspired you to start T&D?

DN: I have used moisturisers for over 20 years. This dirty little habit started after reading an interview with Rod Stewart who reckoned it was the secret too his youth! I was an international cricketer at the time and I found that it instantly relieved my dry skin and was a great tool to help me feel fresh after a long day in the sun. When I retired from sport, I joined the 42below team (NZ Vodka co). Working there, I learnt about branding and marketing and I guess caught the bug to start my own brand. Putting the two ideas together meant that I knew the product I wanted to make and how I wanted it to perform and I also knew how I wanted it to look and appeal. I then discovered a poem by Rudyard Kipling, called IF, that my father gave me when I was about 13 and read the line – ‘if you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two impostors just the same’ – the deal was done.

TMHS: You had your Australian launch party this week. Tell me more of this.

DN: We just wanted to celebrate those retailers and friends in Australia that have jumped on board and helped us get going here. We held a little speakeasy gig in central Melbourne and pulled a few favours from some of our favourite Aussie musicians – it was a blast, lots of bootleg liquor, a few speeches and plenty of good times. Let’s just say we needed more than moisturiser to resurrect us the next day.

TMHS:  You must be excited to have launched in Australia.  I was at one of your new stockists the other day, Moelleux, here on the Gold Coast, and I wanted to take the whole range home with me.  It seems a natural progression for a NZ brand to launch in Australia.  How has the range been received in Australia so far?

DN: So far its been great. We actually went to the USA to launch first, as I was a little concerned about how Australia would view a cousin coming across the ditch to sell his wares, but my fears have turned out foundless.  It’s like anywhere else, if you are open and honest, deliver great products and service, then people respond. Along with that, we got lucky with Sian and Francesca who are our team here in Australia, both are rockstars.

TMHS: What is your favourite product in the range?

DN: I love them all but the two favourites are rock and roll suicide face scrub and game face moisturiser – life changing :) – they truly are amazing, natural, gentle but super effective products. Ozzy Osbourne was recently in NZ and seen purchasing rock and roll suicide which I think is both cool and a little ironic.

TMHS: Where can Triumph & Disaster be found in Australia?

It is hard to find someone who doesn’t know about Ray-Ban.  Many of us will own a pair of Ray-Ban’s and most of us are familiar with style icons wearing their favourite Wayfarer, Clubmaster and Aviator styles.  The styles have been consistent over the years with updates in the form of colours and materials used.  My latest pair is the Original Wayfarer in Ice Pop Mint  (RB-2140 6058/3M).  I usually go for a classic dark colour, however I’ve found it a fun colour for over summer here in Australia.

Here are some of my favourite images featuring these iconic frames.  I’m sure this won’t be the last post I do featuring the style icon of Ray-Ban.  What are some of your favourite Ray-Ban styles worn by style icons?  Tag me in your Instagram photos (@themanhasstyle) or comment below. I’d love to see what inspires you.

Creating a Difference for Creative People in Business

Creating a Difference by Darcy Clarke

Creating a Difference by Darcy Clarke

Over the years I have read so many books on business and I usually have at least one on the go, more often than not, a few I’m reading. Last year, I interviewed designer Darcy Clarke about his furniture and lighting design.  At the time, he was in the process of finishing off and publishing a book about business tips for creative people.  When the book was released this year, Darcy was kind enough to send me a copy.  There is some great advice in there and many tips I hadn’t come across before.  The content is not complicated and brings up so many concerns and obstacles I have, over the years, had creative people tell me they have been overwhelmed by, including myself!  It feels like you are in a conversation with Darcy and listening intently about his experience. It is well worth reading and one I have picked up time and time again to remind me of some of the areas I need a step up in.  I found it so refreshing having a book aimed at creative people in business.  I had a chat to Darcy about the book and his experience and wanted to share with you all.

TMHS: You mentioned in our interview last year on The Man Has Style that the idea for writing the book came from  a business and entrepreneurial conference in Suva, Fiji aimed at creative people.  It must be a great feeling to have the book published and a reality. How has the response been so far?

DC: It is indeed a great feeling! Once I had decided to do the guide and actually follow-up on what was started at the conference, getting to this point now is quite satisfying. I feel that the guide is complete, but the overall venture and objectives is only beginning. The response from people I’ve shown the guide to is positive. I’m hearing responses like, “big effort, well done”, “I could do with some advice like that” and “creatives need this”.

A quote from 'Creating a Difference' by Darcy Clarke

A quote from ‘Creating a Difference’ by Darcy Clarke

TMHS: I’m quite an avid reader of business and entrepreneurial stories and advice.  I often find the creative person is not considered in the mix. Reading through your book I found myself almost relieved to be hearing some of your words.  There are so many amazingly talented creatives however, without the knowledge and understanding of what to do with this in business, it can be an even more difficult road to see this talent turned into something you can make money from.  You discuss the creative as the main focus of your advice. Being a creative yourself, did you find writing the book you had more clarity in your own business?

DC: Yes I’ve read many such books and have been surprised by my unexpected keen interest in business. It was sparked by years in the creative world and bringing success to my business. I’ve also engaged and listened to many creative friends who are doing great work and sometimes struggling at simple business things.

As you stated, creative people haven’t been highlighted in business – until now! So I’ve found a niche!  This is a good thing for any business. My focus is clear – to get rid of words and information where a creative will glaze over, and offer the advice in a way that a creative can more easily relate to. The guide is, in lots of ways, general and it does covers a lot. So readers can go on the full journey or jump into any chapter in which advice is sought or needed.

Yes, definitely my experience in writing the guide has been very interesting. I feel that the guide itself must be a successful business venture so the ideas in the guide are being applied to the venture which is “Creating a Difference”. I enjoy self learning.  I believe there is always more to learn and I know that I love creativity discussing business. This is a perfect enterprise for me and who knows where it is going to go. To great places no doubt.

TMHS: Where can readers buy the book and find out more?

DC: Readers can purchase the guide online. Or at selected stockists (their details are on the site under “buy local”). International readers are may want to email details so I can inform them on the e-book release.

In Love With: Wooden Tie Bars by McAdams Co

McAdams Co Wooden Tie Bars in Cherry Wood

McAdams Co Wooden Tie Bars in Cherry Wood

Last year I featured a story on a Kickstarter campaign by Austin McAdams of McAdams Co for his unique wooden tie bars.  Later, I was to learn it was a very successful campaign.  A few weeks ago I was so excited to receive from Austin a sample range and I am in still in awe at how beautiful they are.  They really are a work of art.  Hand crafted in San Diego, the wood is spectacular in both the American Cherry Wood and Walnut.  The finish is smooth with a satin clear finish and come in two sizes – for the traditional width tie (2″) and a skinnier width tie (1-5/8″).  Along with the wood looking and feeling amazing, it is also water resistant.  The wooden tie bars are unique on the market and as such, are patent pending. I love seeing new product that is fresh and something that I haven’t seen before.  Austin has designed a product that is simply beautiful.  I had been in contact with Austin since last year about the campaign and since caught up a regularly on the progress of the range.  He was kind enough to share some of his inspiration and thoughts on the whole process.

McAdams Co Wooden Tie Bar

McAdams Co Wooden Tie Bar

TMHS: I absolutely LOVE the tie bars.  You were kind enough to send me a sample of each.  Being able to hold them and feel the smoothness of the wood, it really took my admiration for the design and function to a higher level. They are so beautifully made and a work of art.  How was the design process for you and what inspired you to create a wooden tie bar?

AM:  The wooden tie bar simply grew from my own selfish need for a product that was missing in the market. I felt there were little to no appealing options in the marketplace and when I searched online, I found nothing refined and slender enough for my taste. I had full access to a woodshop as a senior in a furniture design/woodworking program so I thought, “I’ll just make my own”. Instead of buying a stock spring clip and glueing a piece of wood to the front (like you see all over the internet), I wanted to design one that was shaped like the classic curved slide clasp. When I realized I could steam bend veneer tight enough to create a clip like that I knew I was on to something. Much of my process the last couple years was designing and building better and faster ways to streamline production so I could make several hundreds in just a few weeks within my shop. I wanted to keep all manufacturing in house so I could experience every aspect of my business and oversee the quality. I still can’t believe how much work it has been for such a little product but I have learned a lot about many aspects of business, production, and fashion trends.

McAdams Co Wooden Tie Bar

McAdams Co Wooden Tie Bar

TMHS: You had a successful project on Kickstarter to fund the Wooden Tie Bars.  It was the first feature I did on a crowd funding campaign on The Man Has Style and I was instantly drawn to the tie bars.  How was the response to the project?  Can you tell me a little of your experience with this?

AM: Kickstarter is such a great outlet for us little people trying to start a business. It was a nerve racking month neurotically watching my funds slowly reach my goal. Near the end I had over $1000 left to reach my goal and I thought it may not happen. That last week my funds increased about $2700, I was beside myself. After that was the hard part, getting all of the orders produced and shipped out. My packaging took much longer and cost way more than expected. So at the end I had no money to pay the $800 of shipping cost to get my backer’s products shipped around the world. That was truly frustrating. Most of the orders went out 2 months later than expected, and I was biting my nails the entire time. It was definitely a hindsight 20/20 sort of situation. It did give me a chance to streamline the production and shipping processes so now I can move forward with business much stronger now. Thanks to my Kickstarter backers I was able to make this small dream a reality and I can’t thank them enough…and thanks to The Man Has Style for the post to help raise funds.

McAdams Co Wooden Tie Bar

McAdams Co Wooden Tie Bar

TMHS:  What can you tell me about the wood that is used for both the Cherry and the Walnut tie bars?

AM: I source my veneer from a prominent supplier out of New York named Certainly Wood. I use American hardwoods because it is local-ish, and is more sustainable than exotic woods. Also with aiming for a more refined look I wanted to use woods like Walnut, Cherry, and Maple with a more subtle grain patterns than most of your exotics. I am also toying around with some dyed veneers to add some color, so look out for those soon.

TMHS: Tell me more about your background into how you became a designer.

AM: Thinking about myself as a designer is a relatively new thing. I have spent my first ten years as an adult working behind a bar. Seven years ago I was accepted into Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts Sculpture program. After a few years, I began taking some classes in the furniture design/woodwork program to learn more about wood as a medium for my sculptural work. Once I made my first piece of furniture I was hooked. Soon after, I transferred my focus out of sculpture and into furniture. Since then, I moved out to San Diego to pursue my Masters in the field at San Diego State University. Up until this point I was making more one off type furniture that was more concept driven. After an accident and unsuccessful surgery with my wrist that happened after my acceptance with graduate school, I began to rethink my future as a furniture maker. I have been thinking about furniture in aspects of design with the possibilities for production, and actually feeling more at home with it. I enjoy designing mostly furniture and can spend all night with my pad and pencil sketching ideas fully content. Even with my bum wrist I am never happier than when I am making a sketched idea come to life so I will continue to keep my hands in the business as much as possible.

McAdams Co Wooden Tie Bar Packaging (cherry wood featured)

McAdams Co Wooden Tie Bar Packaging (cherry wood featured)

TMHS:  Your craftsmanship is impeccable with the tie bars.  Do you design any other products?  How can we see more of your work?

AM: I have a lot of products in mind but I find myself beginning to think more and more about furniture ideas. I have made plenty of furniture in the past but I now am thinking of making my own line to sell in short production runs. I am thinking I may begin expanding the McAdams Co line into other aspects of household/lifestyle design soon, but I need to get several more months down the road to decide where I want to take this project. I will also be releasing a few wooden collar stays and some new tie bar styles soon.

Polo by the Sea with Vicomte A.

What a fun day it was at Polo by the Sea here on the Gold Coast today.  Sponsor, Vicomte A. extended an invitation to me and my partner Jacques to be their guests at the event which was a great opportunity to see the sport up close and meet with Axel and Fred of Vicomte A. in Australia.  The players were all wearing the Vicomte A. polo shirts which looked fantastic and both Axel and Fred looked spectacular dressed in the brand from head to toe (shoes included!).  Undeniably, the perfect style for the polo.

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I’m always on the lookout for freshness in menswear.  With the introduction of Vicomte A. to Australian retail, it has definitely made me sit up and take notice.  The designs are preppy, which I am quite fond of, but with an added edge that sets it apart.   Not afraid of colour or detail, the overall design of each piece not only looked beautiful, it has the backing of exceptional quality of the fabric and construction of the garments, making Vicomte A. a brand to watch.   My fascination with the designs and history of Vicomte A. has led me to interview Founder,  Arthur de Soultrait.  I have a full story and interview coming up soon on The Man Has Style where I will talk more of the brand and Arthur’s inspirations.

A big thank you to Axel and Fred from Vicomte A. for their generosity in treating Jacques and I to a brilliant day at the Polo by the Sea.

Prince William & David Beckham: Whose Side Are You On?

David Beckham and Prince William

David Beckham and Prince William

I often have the discussion with my partner about those who are in positions of power, whether it be through their fame, finances or ability to make change, and how important it is for them to use their positions for overall goodness in the world. He is such a strong believer in this and I agree.  While I write about the design world, which often is full of indulgences, giving to others and helping raise awareness for causes is just as much a reason why I started The Man Has Style as these privileges.

Prince William and David Beckham are two such men who use their positions to do this. This week they launched the Whose Side Are You On campaign through United for Wildlife. “It’s time to choose between critically endangered species and the criminals who kill them for money. Whose side are you on?” wrote William on the United for Wildlife website.

Prince William explained the illegal wildlife trade leaves “two thousand endangered species … on the verge of being lost forever.” The campaign is not about raising money, rather on awareness. He discussed how by keeping the illegal wildlife trade hidden, it allows the criminals to grow and develop further.

The campaign is being further promoted via sport. Sporting stars including Andy Murray, Lewis Hamilton and basketballer Yao Ming have all joined in on raising awareness. David Beckham said, “I believe sport is a vital way of engaging and highlighting issues and #whosesideareyouon is a perfect example of how sport can raise awareness about a conservation.”  Prince Harry has also joined brother William in sharing his support.

David Gandy by Melissa Uren for The Man Has Style at London Collections: Men

What an exciting time it was for The Man Has Style at London Collections: Men.  Our official photographer, Melissa Uren was on hand to capture some of the moments that further our love of menswear.  While there is so much to cover with an event such as LCM there are particular elements that impress outside of the presentations of the collections.  When the photos came through from Melissa of David Gandy and the spectacular 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupé, I must say, I didn’t know which I wanted to talk about more… the car, what Mr Gandy was wearing or the fact he looks amazing in every photo.  There’s a reason this man is at the top of his field!

What can I say about the car?  Where do I start?  I have looked through dreamy eyes at the beauty in the design and my romantic mind has imagined me owning such a beautiful mode of transport so many times over the years that sometimes it does feel like it is part of my future.  The photos speak a thousand words… so many wonderful words! Enjoy!

London Collections: Men delivered on so many levels.  The other day, I talked about David Gandy and that amazing 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupé.  One of my favourite cars and one I have dreamed of driving myself.  For those of you who know me, you know I have a slight dog obsession.  Slight is probably an understatement too! So you can imagine, LCM really had me enthralled when our Officlal Photographer for The Man Has Style, Melissa Uren sent through the Orlebar Brown images.  It was a tough one this time not being able to make it in person to the shows but thankfully Melissa was there to capture all the action.

What I love about Orlebar Brown is the fun in their brand.  Great use of colour and some beautiful prints that work in well with the Under Water theme. Clean styling with little details that keep it from being too simple.  Oliver Cheshire who has featured in Orlebar Brown campaigns previously, was there to share in the fun too.  There were so many photos from this presentation that I am going to do another story showing the stylish men who were there, so keep an eye out! In the meantime, enjoy!

London, you are really after my heart when you keep showing me so many wonderful delights.  Last week at London Collections: Men, in all the mix of such wonders, was a beautiful Bentley Arnage.  Owned by respected businessman, Mr Harold Tillman CBE, the Arnage is a work of art.  It is quite fitting that the owner is a man who has made fashion and design such a big part of his life.  The former chair of the British Fashion Council, Mr Tillman was looking the part of the man with style in his Savile Row suit, bespoke made by Terry Haste, shoes by Prada, Ralph Lauren shirt and a beautiful Tom Ford tie.  Alongside him, Mr Marshall Lester was also looking ever so stylish, something one can almost expect from a businessman who has been responsible for launching some of the biggest brands in the world of fashion.

What though, stands out for me the most of these men?  The gentlemanly approach and respect they have shown when communicating.  Quality in any design is amplified when it is surrounded by gentlemen.

The gentlemen attending London Collections: Men looked brilliant.  Attention to detail was evident and the passion for what was being worn was wonderful to see.  I do love the diversity of LCM, it covers such a broad spectrum of menswear and embraces so many different forms of expression both in the collections being presented and on the street.  Here are a selection of some of the gentleman from LCM that have inspired me and helped further my love of menswear.

Arthur de Soultrait & Vicomte A.

Vicomte A.

Anders Lindstrom for Vicomte A.

Last month I was fortunate to be a guest of Vicomte A. at the Polo by the Sea here on the Gold Coast, Australia.  It was such a fun day and gave me the opportunity to learn more about the brand.  It has been a great connection between The Man Has Style and Vicomte A.  A great mix of quality in design, a lust for life and not getting too serious that we miss the beauty of living! I wanted to know even more about the man who started it, Arthur de Soultrait, so asked him some questions about the brand, his inspirations and background.

Vicomte A.

Vicomte A.

TMHS: Thank you Arthur for being part of The Man Has Style.  It was such a pleasure when I was introduced to Vicomte A. as it embodies so much that inspired me to start TMHS. You started VICOMTE A. when you were 22 years old.  Did you have a big vision for the brand at this time?

AS: Firstly, I want to thank you for having me here. I’m very happy to answer your questions! You must know I fell into the world of fashion quite by chance. I was undertaking work experience during my third year at a Parisian business school. Shortly after my arrival in Charlotte, North Carolina, the company I worked for went bankrupt. Meaning I lost both my job and accommodation, as well as my means of getting home. As a solution I embarked on a mission to raise enough capital to return home by walking door to door in a wealthy part of town selling my personal collection of ties. Luckily, they sold very fast. This really motivated me.

Back in France, whilst still a student, I secured the contract in 2005 designing and supplying silk ties to the French delegation representing the Paris bid to host the 2012 Olympics Games. The stock of several thousand sold out in a flash and left me with sufficient funds to start “Vicomte A.”

For me my interest in fashion has always been part of an idea of a lifestyle rather than just an obsession with image or clothes. From a young age visiting events with my parents I was captivated by the different codes of dress and the easy timeless elegance these outfits embodied, from morning coats at the races to tweeds and brogues on relaxed country weekends.

Vicomte A.

Anders Lindstrom for Vicomte A.

TMHS: Your collections are exceptional in both design and quality of the garments themselves. Having worked with different areas of design and production for the past 15 years, I was really impressed with the detailing and fabrics used.  It felt like extra thought had gone into the design in both function and visual appeal to make each piece have a reason to make it superior to others you see on the market.  How important are the fine details to you in the overall collection?

AS: Thanks for pointing that out. Our brand values quality more than anything, and it’s always a pleasure to see that people notice it. Details are incredibly important. Whenever we start developing a collection, we study all the facets of the world and style we are looking at that season.
This includes vintage clothing, art, films, and any other meaningful symbols.

By then twisting these, and integrating them into our modern silhouettes, whether it is in a color scheme, a fastening or a pocket shape. This is how we give value to our product, and an authentic but fresh nature that our customers appreciate.

Vicomte A.

Francis Villalva for Vicomte A.

TMHS: How important is color to you with VICOMTE A.?

AS: My heritage has a strong influence on the style of the brand and in fact the bold colors of the original collections were directly taken from the jockey kits I had observed going to the races with my parents (who are horse breeders in Burgundy) and my brothers and sister as a child.

Using bold high contrast colors has become a defining factor in the VICOMTE A style and is evident in all our product ranges, from swimwear all the way to suiting.

Vicomte A.

Vicomte A.

TMHS: The VICOMTE A. campaigns are brilliant! I love how fun they are and yet still have a strong fashion element.  How do you feel the campaigns represent VICOMTE A.?

AS: We have been very lucky to work with Fred&Farid Agency for the last three seasons, to develop the core concept of the brand, which is what I call the “prepster” style. Basically it involves a mix of the hipster look and the preppy look. We wanted to make our brand colorful, and we’ve been hugely happy with the results. We have done a lot of work to move VICOMTE A. forward to become a full lifestyle brand and the campaigns have been key in changing these perceptions.

We try to cast models who challenge our customers first idea of the brand and we’ve been working with Francis Villalva, Anders Lindstrom and Jake Hold to name a few. SS14 was a lot of fun, where we had live monkeys, lions, snakes and more all in the studio. The shoots always seem to get a little wild.

Vicomte A.

TMHS: I loved the recent video on YouTube you posted, ‘Soirée Punk Safari’ which looked amazing. Tell me more of this.

AS: Every year we do a party at the same time as my birthday, but also to celebrate the birth of the brand, since we were both born in April. We try to think of a fun theme that usually relates to our recent collection. This year was Punk Safari, as the collection of SS14 was safari themed, and we had a lot of fun twisting around with vibrant zebra wallpapers, Punk mohawks, African dancers and neon tags.

All the team is involved and everyone attends. It’s a great opportunity to thank everyone for the hard work they perform during the year, as well as gaining us some great exposure for the brand. In the 2012 party, we were pleased to welcome Pippa Middleton at our party “Le Roi est mort, Vive le Vicomte !”, which made it quite successful.

Watch the YouTube video of ‘Soirée Punk Safari’

TMHS: Where was the first VICOMTE A. retail store in France?  The first outside France?  What do you look for when scouting for new locations?

AS: The first in France was VICOMTE A. Saint Germain des Près, 40 rue du Dragon. Abroard it was VICOMTE A. Palm Beach, Florida (USA) in 2007.  Like these 2 addresses, we want our shops to be in the centre of each city, the best area, the best street. We are looking for the best location for our customers.

TMHS: The VICOMTE A. brand is accompanied with the locations Paris and Palm Beach. Tell me more about this.

AS: Palm Beach and Paris were our first two locations. My young brother happened to be in Palm Beach when I launched the brand, as a rider in Wellington (Palm Beach, USA), so he was on the spot to help opening the shop. For me, as well as being somewhat coincidental, it seemed a nice encapsulation of the brands outlook and the easy, colorful preppy but distinctly French approach to dressing.

Vicomte A.

Vicomte A.

TMHS. Where did the inspiration to bring VICOMTE A. to Australia come from?

AS: We had the chance to meet Axel & Fred, two very motivated French importers, who were looking for the French brand and they got in touch with us. Plus, I’ve never been to Australia, and I can’t wait to see the country! France and Australia are not too far, we should see each other more often.

TMHS: VICOMTE A. recently sponsored the Polo by the Sea here on the Gold Coast, Australia. How important is partnering with polo to you and what are some of the other polo events you are involved with around the world?

AS: VICOMTE A. is involved in sports in general (horse riding, jumping, golf, sailing) and indeed, polo events are part of the lifestyle we are. Sponsoring the Polo by the Sea on the Gold Coast was the first for a very strong visibility for the brand, as we are just starting in this country.

VICOMTE A. is the official sponsor of Polo Club St Tropez (France); Polo Club of Gstaad (Switzerland), and every season we sponsor Polo events in London (GCC Cup with the Queen Elizabeth), in Berlin and in Geneva.

Vicomte A.

Francis Villalva for Vicomte A.

Vicomte A.

Francis Villalva for Vicomte A.

TMHS: Three things you can’t do without in your day?

AS: First, there is my combo Iphone & Blackberry, which I always have on hand, quick on the draw! And then there is my Twizy (electric Renault car), of course, and my dog Frip.

TMHS: What’s next for Vicomte A.?

AS: Hopefully our first shop in Australia!

What a wonderful film Yves Saint Laurent is!  Today I watched it at the cinema and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Pierre Niney as Yves Saint Laurent and Guillaume Gallienne as Pierre Bergé, were wonderful in their roles as was Charlotte Le Bon (Victoire Doutreleau).  The story is so moving and I had many moments of joy and those of sadness.  The design throughout the film was brilliant.  I’m not going to say too much other than I loved it and I highly recommend going to see Yves Saint Laurent.

Top 5 Male Models

Every time I post a story, I think of familiarities of past stories or those that I would like to do in the future. It’s like I am past, present and future all in one. If you have been following my stories and social media for the past few years, you would have noticed common themes throughout. When I have editorial presented in front of me, there are some definite common threads of what I am drawn to. As I was preparing a new post the other week, I thought about the male models that were my favourite faces. I went back through my posts, social media and all the things I have worked on and found my Top 5 male models, and what a great task that was! I tried to do a Top 10 but I kept arguing with myself (yes, it was interesting) over who should be in and who should be out, but I did make my Top 5. I hope you enjoy and if you would like to see more of a particular model on The Man Has Style, please leave me a comment below.

David Gandy by Melissa Uren for The Man Has Style at London Collections: Men

David Gandy not only looks the part, he is also a big supporter of men’s fashion and is actively involved in promoting this. His love of cars and dogs doesn’t go unnoticed either, along with his very down to earth attitude. It was a pleasure to have him pick up my story and accompanying photos by Melissa Uren for The Man Has Style at London Collections: Men earlier this year and share with his followers (read here).  I have featured him so many times on The Man Has Style over the past almost three years, I couldn’t go passed him being in first. With so many amazing campaigns he has featured in, his look is universal and appeals to so many.

Jon Kortajarena. Goodness me, he was so close to number one, in fact, it took me so long to write this post as I kept going back and forth on who would come in but he was slightly edged out by Mr Gandy! Striking and absolutely beautiful, Jon Kortajarena can take your breathe away in photos. Not only in photos either! I was watching A Single Man again on the weekend, and his role as Carlos in that also makes you take notice. His work is wonderful and following him on social media, he has such a wonderful energy. Right up there with the best!

His look is pure class and often with an air of mystery. I always think of Clément Chabernaud as belonging in a film as he was with De Fursac for Winter 2013 (see here).

What can I say? Aiden Shaw is a favourite of mine for sure. His look helps capture the quality of the clothing he wears. Silver flowing hair and a magnificent beard, his look is distinguished and strong. Alongside his wonderful modelling work, he is also a writer and musician.

Diego Miguel for Calibre Underwear on The Man Has Style

Diego Miguel in the launch of Calibre Underwear Collection

Calibre Underwear Launch Collection

Cheeky is one way of describing the video for the launch of the first Calibre Underwear collection. The campaign is called ‘Best Dressed, Best Undressed’ and Brazilian model Diego Miguel is the perfect man for this campaign and plays the role well. Director Liam Gilmour works wonders to balance the humour and style, not always as easy task when showing men’s underwear. The music is fantastic and works brilliantly with the voice over. The range itself features both briefs and trunks as well as a low rise option, named The Euro Cut. The collection is filled out by a simple singlet, which along with the other garments is made of Supima cotton stretch; a superfine, breathable American Pima cotton, made extra special due to it’s softness and strength.

If you live in Melbourne, keep an eye out for the campaign images by Justin Ridler, which will be featured on trams in the CBD from Monday.  If you want to get involved with the campaign socially, follow Calibre @calibreaustralia on Instagram and Facebook as well as #bestundressed #calibreunderwear

Victorinox Swiss Army I.N.O.X. Watch review on The Man Has Style

Victorinox Swiss Army I.N.O.X. Watch

Victorinox Swiss Army I.N.O.X.

Why the I.N.O.X is a Watch for a Lifetime

The more I review different watches and search for new designs and delve back into the watches of yesteryear, the more fascinated I become, I feel I am more and more in love with timepieces every day. A few months ago, I wrote about the Victorinox Swiss Army Alliance Watch. Since then, I have continued to learn more about the different designs they have released and I wanted to share another with you all. This year, 2014, is the 130th anniversary of the Swiss Army Knife which is Victorinox’s most well known product. As part of the celebrations they have released a new watch, the I.N.O.X. which encompasses all the things they are best known for. The Swiss design is famous for it’s credibility, quality, strength and their overall attention to detail in all areas and the I.N.O.X. delivers on this and takes it a step further.

Victorinox Swiss Army I.N.O.X. Watch review on The Man Has Style

Victorinox Swiss Army I.N.O.X. Watch

The I.N.O.X. takes the level of strength and ability to withstand stresses to levels that are amazing. The watch was put through 130 strength tests. One hundred and thirty! The Swiss watch industry are not strangers to certification tests, one of the reasons they are so well admired, but 130 tests, that’s a lot! Victorinox Swiss Army like to take it further, go beyond what is expected and stretch the boundaries to shatter the current rules on resistance and set their own. So, you might be wondering what it takes to do these tests? Surely, they must have gone through a few watches when testing? Over a six month testing period, 421 I.N.O.X. watches were sacrificed to research.

The corrosion-resistant material used was originally used in the US Army, not for watches, but for military use. It stands up against salt spray corrosion and chemical attacks such as insecticides, fuel, solvents, cleaning products and oils. What I felt is amazing, is the material is resistant to sulphuric acid and nitric acid solution! We often think of watches as fragile and delicate, but the I.N.O.X. is designed to withstand such harsh environments.

Drop your watch and your heart drops too. In testing, the I.N.O.X. fell 10 meters onto a smooth concrete surface and survived. Think of 10 metres, it’s about the height of a 3 storey building. Dropping it from this height means the watch hits that ground at about 50km/hour. It doesn’t seem so bad to think of dropping this watch from your hand when you hear that.

So, it’s levels of corrosion and impact resistance are already making me think the watch is a winner, but what about extremes in temperature and other conditions? This watch can withstand two hours in a washing machine, full spin cycle and at 90C. I often hear stories from friends around the world on social media who have accidentally tangled their phone or their watch in with their bedding and it’s ended up in the washing machine (I may even be one of the culprits!). The I.N.O.X. survives even glacial cold. One of the tests, in the 130 tests conducted, was freezing it in an ice cube for 168 hours. It functioned non-stop and without a problem. Give it heat and it is okay too. The watch was exposed to a flame 5mm away for over one minute and it came through fine. The flame gets to +1,200 degrees Celsius. It can withstand temperature shocks of -57 to +71 Celsius. Now, that may not mean anything to the average person because we don’t often think in those extremes, but to explain, it’s what the US Army use as a standard for the manufacture of missiles. Way more than a watch is likely to experience in the every day, but the resistance of the materials is so well demonstrated in these tests.

So, it’s sorted for extremes in hot and cold, what else? Another test that caught my interest was the stratospheric altitude test. It was taken to twice the height of which airlines fly (around 21,300 metres) and came through unscathed. Now it’s not often we are that high, but it’s good to know it can withstand all these conditions. It really demonstrates the robustness of the watch. Want to give it some pressure in terms of weight? In the testing, they added 8 tons of compression under a hydraulic press, the watch came up fine. Don’t worry if you drive over it in your car, it can resist being driven over by a truck of 25 tons and a military tank up to 64 tons. Okay, so your car driving over your watch now doesn’t seem like such a big deal!

Combining Strength & Design

Now, I’m not just about the strength of the watch. So, you’ve found a super strong watch before but it looks terrible. I always find it frustrating when functionality and quality take away from design. So many times, one is sacrificed for the other. Thankfully, the I.N.O.X. design keeps with the iconic style of Victorinox Swiss Army. Clean lines with functional style. First and foremost, it tells the time and date and is sustainably designed to last a lifetime. The overall look of the I.N.O.X. keeps with the sophistication of the long standing Victorinox Swiss Army design. It has a 43mm stainless steel case, enhanced by a hexagonal bevel that is beautiful polished. Classic and strong. There is a choice of three colours. I always like choice. Firstly, a black dial and strap, then a khaki green dial and strap, and lastly, a navy blue dial and strap. Want to personalise it a bit more? There is an accessory called a ‘bumper’. Relatively new to the world of watches, a bumper is perfectly named as it’s the removable silicone and nylon protector that also changes the look of your watch. When you are in the office, I’m sure the stainless steel look is perfect, however when you are in the mountains or outdoors for some more adventurous pursuits the bumper gives it a totally different look. What I like about this is the ability to be able to wear the same watch between the office, to your social events and for the leisure activities too. This is especially good for when you are travelling. You want to keep your belongings light when travelling and this is a great way of mixing in the different activities you may be doing. I remember the last time I was in Geneva, it was a quick trip to visit family and I was travelling very light. One day we were dining at an elegant restaurant by Lake Geneva, the next, we had taken a side trip and made our way to the top of Mont Blanc. Both beautiful, however completely different experiences and conditions.

Along with the reinforced stainless steel case, it has scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with triple anti-reflection treatment. The case is water resistant to 200 metres (660 feet) and has a screwed-on stainless steel case back. The I.N.O.X. has stamped indexes and luminescent hour markers and minutes hands. You’ll find military time on the flange and the date window at 4:30. Overall, the Victorinox Swiss Army I.N.O.X. ticks all the boxes for a watch for me. It covers quality design, function and sustainability. A watch should last a lifetime and the strength of this watch paired with its classic design makes this watch a perfect option.

Yale Co-op Shirt GANT Campus Store on The Man Has Style

Yale Co-op Shirt GANT Campus Store

The GANT Yale Co-Op Shirt

There are some things I see that make me feel so nostalgic. I’m a bit of a romantic and have to admit, I do love looking back in time. I start daydreaming and off I go into my own world, mixing in the history with my own imagination. I have so much sent to me for The Man Has Style, with anything that refers to times gone by grabbing my attention and more often than not inspiring me to share.

The GANT Yale Co-op Shirt takes me back to the 1960s. Now I wasn’t around during this time, however it still resonates with me. The Yale Co-op shirt was born in 1949 and has a wealth of history. It is great to see GANT have reissued the original designs from the 1960s collection of their Yale Co-op collection.

Student and Professors of Yale on Campus

The social hub of the campus was the Yale Co-op. It was a store where you could buy everything you might need. Think books, toiletries and even clothing. It was back in the 1960s that GANT made an exclusive shirt collection for this Co-op with Yale and GANT’s hometown, New Haven, seeing the shirt become a huge hit.  Now GANT has now reissued this collection. “It’s been over 60 years ago since GANT revolutionised the Oxford shirt with great inventions such as the locker loop and the back collar button, and we still admire the impact those inventions had on American Sportswear”, said GANT’s Creative Director Christopher Bastin. The collection has been recreated under an official agreement with Yale University’s Office of Marketing and Trademark Licensing.

The campaign images are all shot on campus with students and professors on campus at Yale.  I love this! While I love my polished campaign images (so, so much!), I also love to see a more down to earth approach at times, if it fits, with a collection. And of course, this is the collection it works so well for.

The Collar

The collar on the GANT shirt was popular for the button-down collar. This feature was designed for when playing polo to keep the collars from getting into your face and originally a British innovation. While the style was loved in the early ‘5os, GANT introduced the button-down collar on a larger scale to the US market. What made it even more popular was the famous roll and casual look, achieved by having a non-fused collar.

The Little Transformations

Detailing plays a big part when creating a garment that is going to be remembered. GANT created a series of innovative tailoring features. So how did they transform a simple shirt into a shirt that had the end user in mind in the design process in more than just fit? The creation of the loop was important as it allowed you to keep your shirt wrinkle free by hanging your shirt by the hook in your sports locker. Easy and fuss free. The story is told that in the 60s the loop was removed when a Yale guy was taken, with his partner wearing his college scarf. Freedom of movement was important and the box pleat below the collar allowed this. Of course, the neck button at the back of the collar ensured the tie and collar stayed in place.

Consistency Mixed with New Additions

Each season the Yale Co-op shirt has six new styles along with it’s 16 styles it runs each collection. Fabric is important, with the basic shirt made from a semi-lightweight Archive Oxford cloth in 100% cotton. You’ll find it in solids, banker stripes and checks. You are not stuck with one fit either with a Regular Fit and Fitted style. Men are always telling me how they get frustrated when there is only one fit in a shirt from a brand, so having the basics in more than one fit is important.

Thom Browne exclusive on Mr Porter

Thom Browne exclusive on MR PORTER

Today is the first day of Summer here in Australia, and while I am enjoying every moment of sunshine, blue skies and beach days, I’m also spending hours each day online dreaming of Winter and planning ahead. Thankfully, I also have an audience that lives all around the world so writing for Winter is quite relevant to many of you!

A collection that caught my eye on MRPORTER.COM is an exclusive by CFDA award winning designer Thom Browne. The exclusive capsule collection is made up of nine pieces. You’ll find a sports jacket, Chesterfield overcoat, cropped trousers and contrast brogue boots. Thom Browne is known for his unique take on classic staples and these pieces stick true to his signature. If you like a slim and lean silhouette, this collection is for you. Thom’s background is that of a master craftsman. This collection clearly shows this influence, with amazing attention to detail. I love the different shades of grey used and the alternating use of fabrics of the same weight. Herringbone tweed in anthracite, grey and charcoal. Thom Browne’s signature red, white and blue grosgrain contrasts beautifully against the variations of grey throughout the collection.
